Doha MUN 2027

Delegate preparation

Walk in ready

You do not need experience. You do need to have read four things and practised one.

The short version

Four things to read, one to write

  1. Your study guide

Written by your own chairs, specific to your committee and its two topics. Everything else is general; this is the one document about the room you will actually be in.

  2. Your country's actual position

Not what you think is right. What your country has signed, voted for, abstained on, and said at the UN. A delegate arguing their own opinion is the most common reason for losing an award.

  3. The rules of procedure

Twenty minutes of reading that decides whether your first session is spent debating or watching. The table below is the part you will use.

  4. Write your position paper

One page per topic, submitted before 10 January. A delegate with no paper on file is not eligible for an award, however well they speak.

Points and motions

What you may say, when you may say it, and which of these allow you to cut across a delegate who is speaking. Two of the six do; using one of the other four to interrupt is the fastest way to be ruled out of order in your first hour.

  • Point of order

The chair or a delegate has broken the rules of procedure.

May interrupt a speaker. Never used to disagree with what was said.

    May interrupt
  • Point of information

A question to the delegate who has the floor.

Only when the speaker has yielded to points. Must be a question, not a speech.

  • Point of personal privilege

You cannot take part — you cannot hear, or you need to leave the room.

May interrupt only when the problem is audibility.

    May interrupt
  • Motion to extend debate

The committee needs longer on the current clause or caucus.

Requires a second and a simple majority.

  • Motion to move to voting procedure

Debate is exhausted and the committee is ready to decide.

The chair may rule it dilatory. Once passed, no further amendments.

  • Right of reply

Your country's dignity was directly impugned.

Granted at the chair's discretion, and rarely. Not for a losing argument.

Conduct

Dress, conduct, and looking after each other

Western business attire or national dress, both equally correct — the standard is the one you would meet a minister in. Debate is adversarial and delegates are not: an argument is made against a country's position, never against the person holding it, and a chair will rule you out of order for the difference.

Every supervising teacher signs the safeguarding policy at registration. If anything at the conference worries you — about yourself or about someone else — the safeguarding address goes to a named adult and is read every day of the event.

Questions we are asked most

Can I register on my own, without my school?

Not as a delegate. Delegations are registered by a teacher or MUN coordinator, who is also the named supervising adult for the four days. Student officer, secretariat, press and administrative roles are applied for directly by the student — those do not need a delegation.

Do I need Model UN experience?

No, for four of the eight committees. GA3, UNEP and the Youth Forum are set up for first-time delegates, and day one includes a procedural workshop. The Security Council and student officer roles do ask for prior experience, because fifteen people with a veto is not a place to learn what a veto is.

Which language will I be debating in?

The one your committee runs in — you choose when your school submits preferences. Five committees run in English, two entirely in Arabic with Arabic drafting and Arabic procedure, and the Youth Forum runs both at once. An Arabic committee is not a translated English one; it has its own agenda and its own study guide.

Is there a fee?

Confirm current fees with the secretariat before you budget — this page is not the source of truth for cost, and quoting a figure here that later changes would be worse than saying so.

What is a position paper, and is it compulsory?

One page, per delegate, per topic: your country's position, what it has already signed or voted for, and what it wants the committee to do. It is compulsory in the sense that matters — a delegate with no paper on file is not eligible for an award, however well they speak.

What should I wear?

Western business attire or national dress, both equally correct. The standard is the one you would meet a minister in. Delegates out of dress code may be asked to leave the floor until they are in it.

Bring your delegation

School registration for Doha MUN 2027 is handled by a teacher or MUN coordinator. Register the school first; delegates are named later.
